A few minor headaches during (infrequent) oil changes definitely do not justify spending $650 on a spin-on conversion to me. Maybe the fuel filter, but not the engine oil filter.
Update:
After talking with my friend who has done a lot with old Cummins engines, I will be removing the clip (which, as I suspected, just holds the bolt in the housing) and installing the filter correctly.
Hello all,
I apologize if this has been covered but I couldn’t find anything in the search bar, or in the TM’s for this.
Today I was trying to change the oil filter on my XM816 and when I went to install the new filter from Napa, I found that unlike the old Fleetguard filter, the Napa/Wix...
Hello All,
After ordering some parts, chasing some leads, installing some parts I "refurbished", and then finding all the missing parts under the passenger's seat... aua I have some info for everyone.
First of all, the boots are available. The OE manufacturer, Basic Rubber and Plastics...
I cleaned them up and put them back together, they’re a little chunky but they should work at least long enough to spool the cable drum out a little. Remember, all I’m trying to do is turn the drum so I can plug the holes and deal with the bees. The drum is a worm drive, so it’s the ONE thing on...
Continuing to work on this project… I disassembled both of the CV joints to check on their condition. One had damaged balls, and both show a considerable amount of galling between the cage and the race. I’m hoping I can get these cleaned up enough to run just briefly, then look into changing the...
Hello all,
I’m working on my XM816’s crane driveshaft. The truck came to me missing the short side of the shaft (lower/front). I got the upper shaft, CV, and boot off yesterday to facilitate breaking the boot bearing loose, and I got the CV out of the power divider PTO housing.
To confirm...
Having checked out CARNAC’s many multiple pages of VIN info, I found my wrecker on there and it is in fact a 1971 as everyone has said. I had it all copied down somewhere, but now I can’t find it.
Regarding the paint, it’s definitely the “winter verdant/Europe” with the forest green and field...
Totally right. I tried to do my homework on that, I messed up somewhere. It’s obvious now, looking at the pivot point of the boom that it’s the older style crane. The hydraulic tank on the deck is a good call too, I didn’t know that. Changed the title.
Well, sure enough, there they are.
I would run with them flipped the other way on the rears, but it might just be doable. Those 14.00-20 NDCC’s aren’t available new anymore, although that would have been neat. Here they are on a howitzer:
I guess now the only questions are if I really need...
Hello All,
WillWagner and I are trying to determine the origin of a set of wheels he has, and whether they’re rated for use on my wrecker.
I haven’t been able to find anything like them. They have an NSN, which is 2530-00-735-3766. They’re 20x10”, so they’re not for the regular size...
Well, crumb.
I guess I don’t get to be the one to upload it… but that also means I don’t have to pay the UPS store to scan it! My hard copy is getting here today, maybe the restoration crew at my museum wants it.
This isn’t at a military salvage yard, but I thought someone might be interested. I just saw it on FB marketplace in Northern California.
Obviously missing some parts, especially the boom. Ad says Continental gas engine.
Owner is asking $4000, no idea about paperwork. He says it runs and...
Exactly as you said. Rolled backward in neutral until the rear tires touched the ground, then into reverse and backed it all the way to where I took the picture. I didn't realize the rules yet.
