Did this problem develop shortly after filling up the diesel tank? If so drain the tank and change the fuel filter again. If new fuel filter helped for a little while I suspect bad fuel!
Narrow tires are always better in snow or mud in my part of the world. They will cut thru and bite better traction where the wider tire will float on surface and spin. The narrow tire will steer better for the same reasons. Wider tire is better in dry sand because of the flotation.

I think the original post is referring to the steel transmission oil cooler lines from the automatic transmission to the radiator. They get pretty messed up sometimes.
If the front brake hoses are old they can collapse on the inside and not let calipers release also. They will let brake fluid go thru under pressure but not let it return.
