If you got mud looking crud out of it, flush from every possible hose connection in every possible direction, and do several cycles. Good time to replace all the hoses and check the thermostat.

And re-reading the post, specifically the length of the wire doesn't make any practical difference. (unless you're getting into the 100's of feet range)
So, if there is a re-useable connection on the back of the gauge, you could probably shorten the wire there.
The wire is likely special thermocouple wire. Any cuts will need to be welded with no filler metals, or crimped with special thermocouple connectors, matching the specific thermocouple type. Other splices or changes will change the level of the temperature signal outside the range of the gauge...
The 2nd then 1st trick helps with mine, but not always. Unload and on flat streets, 1st isn't really necessary. If you are at a stop sign, you'll have to shift to 2nd by the time you get 1/2 way into the intersection anyway. I only use low playing in the dirt, but the truck is rarely loaded and...
