    M1078 A1 transfer case

i remember seeing something about the strainer a whole back but chased down the info today. The thread had some good pics of what was found. Another project, but everything’s delayed while I help clear up a friends estate. Lots of old cars, nearly all Dodge products. And I’ve got to contract...

    M1078 A1 transfer case

Yeah, not happy it's a stupid-expensive part that went through several redesigns. And it didn't make it to the local shop as promised this morning! I've looked at another thread that covers metal in the transmission/transfer case and seen where there's a strainer in a line from the transfer case...

    M1078 A1 transfer case

Replacement plastic bearing and gasket is now on order through a local Allison dealer - Smith Power Products in Sparks, NV. About $400 for the bearing, not so much for the gasket ($40-$60?). Overnight from Allison supply another $20. Sigh. There goes some other toys I wanted to get for other...

    M1078 A1 transfer case

Pulled the rear driveshaft, cut a piece out of the storage tray rail, and pulled the C6 assembly. Removed the snap ring, lifted out the inner section with friction and steel plates. Other than the two metal races, the only thing left of the bearing was a few small pieces of metal and plastic in...

Oh fan-fscking-tastick. Thanks for that piece of good news! Front driveshaft is out for new u-joints, trans filters replaced. Nothing apparent in the two filter screens. Will pull rear driveshaft for joints and use that extra space for the C6 fix.

Also, regarding crossmembers. I’ve got the M1081 bed. Above/behind the C6 pack is the bed side panel storage bin. That l need to be trimmed for the top of the clutch. Below/behind the pack is a tubular crossmember. I have no issues cutting the storage bin to clear the top of the pack. Will the...

Oh, and were you having problems with your trans? Your job should be easier, if the pics of the tractor are accurate.

    M1078 A1 transfer case

Transmission has been (knock on wood) working perfectly. I hadn’t done a fluid/filter change on the transmission since I got the truck umpteen years ago. I think/hope that I caught it early enough. I covered the exhaust pipe with aluminum foil to direct the oil down and prevent a big mess. The...

    M1078 A1 transfer case

Ok, looks like I’m another “C6 of Death” owner. For some reason I decided to cough up the money for a filter change on the trans in my 1998 M1081. Here’s what the transfer case drain plug looked like: and here’s another view after I wiped the stuff from the magnet: Looks like I’m pulling the...

Sorry, but it is a hidden part, no line of sight, find by feel. Steel bracket, sandwiched between the air compressor and the power steering pump. Right angle then lays flat to the side of the engine with I think three bolts into the block. edit: one bolt on the compressor and two into the...

What have you done to your FMTV or LMTV today

Started again this morning Without issue. Cleaning the ground on the starter and adding a lead directly from the battery negative to the frame did the trick. spare tire lift was locking up. Pulled the ram, manually extended and retracted it with the hydraulic fitting hooked to hoses in a bucket...

Another source of vibration that is associated with unbalanced driveshafts is when the bracket between the air pump nd hydraulic power steering pump is missing or loose. That can cause the front cover on the engine to crack, and a new oil leak on the engine. You can’t see the bracket or...

Started without complaint this afternoon, hooray. However, no amount of fussing could convince the spare tire hydraulic ram to behave, even pulling out the spring and ball sets. Had to use the tractor forks to reload the spare in the rack. Unloading will be easy: push it out of the rack. Bad...
