I too have 24F walmart batteries. They were cheap, didnt want to spend $$ only to find the motor was no good. They are still getting the job done 3 years later. (knocks on nearby piece of wood)
I wouldn't buy Optima batteries again. They use to be great, I had one last 12+ years, new ones don't...
Never broken one in a HMMWV, but have broken a few in equipment. Welding a nut has saved me about 90% of the time. Welding the nut on there really good untill the nut is glowing cherry red, then letting it cool seems to do the trick for me. Accessibility always seems to be problematic in a HMMWV...
Quick tip cutting horse stall matt: Knives work best. Also a "wet wood" saw blade in a worm drive circular saw with lots of water works for those long, strait cuts. Horse stall matting stinks to high heaven when it is new! (Like the tire/ castor section of Harbor Freight) Gym mat doesn't smell...
The lights I have been using off of Amazon have a 12/24 volt rating. Haven't had them long, but they seem to be surviving so far!
Some have even had 6-36 volt ratings as well, I don't think LED's are as picky about what they are supplied?
Chains are the great equalizer on icy surfaces. You could probably get decent results with siping a set of Goodyear Inforcers? The Baja's seem like they are just too hard of a compound for ice. (maybe mine are just old)
We plowed for years and really liked BFG all terrains. We had them siped, there is probably better tires out there nowadays.
We also did it with 2WD dually truck. We always had a cement block or a big salt spreader in the back. Made all the difference!
Never done it in a HMMWV: a lot of the trail is pretty easy. If you go it clockwise you really dont even need 4x4. If you do it counterclockwise low-range is helpful on some of the steeper climbs. May be a few spots that the Tamarisk will leave pinstripes, but nothing crazy!
Just remember to...
I always disconnect the negative on the battery. (when i actually remember) Done lots of welding/ fab with it connected and disconnected, never had problems either way.
'Aint a darn thing wrong with a good old High-lift! Just don't be stupid with it. Lifting all 4 wheels off the ground at the same time with only Highlifts would fall into that category. I would lift one end, toss jack stands under it then lift the other end. Only then would I take off any wheels...
