Wow! Welcome to the Outfit! Yep, you are in the right spot too.

You never know on batteries. Maybe yes. Maybe no... It never hurts to try. Hopefully that is all the problems you have. Might be worth downloading the TM's (Technical Manuals) for your new to you truck.

Don’t buy anything until you inspect your rig.

Gear reduction starter is cheap and you can (and must) adapt the vehicle to only supply 12v to it.

If you go stock 24V starter, prepare to spend $1000 for a new one. If you purchase used, prepare to open and inspect and clean it out. Ensure the bendix works. Most importantly, make sure you purchase shims and correct starter bolts prior to installing. They are heavy! Use a motorcycle transmission jack addition on a car jack, or get a helper.

Batteries I use are $66 24F from Walmart. Last for years and in Virginia they should get you started. Work fine for my rigs in NYC, even at 4 degrees F.

When you calculate most batteries dying at 3-5 years, financially you’re way ahead IMHO. When they fail, easy and cheap to replace.

I too have 24F walmart batteries. They were cheap, didnt want to spend $$ only to find the motor was no good. They are still getting the job done 3 years later. (knocks on nearby piece of wood)

I wouldn't buy Optima batteries again. They use to be great, I had one last 12+ years, new ones don't seem to even last the warranty period.

As far as starters go: HMMWV specific starters are stupid expensive! When I was looking on ebay used, untested take-outs were $$. If you are not needing "millspec" unit, civilian works good enough. I ordered a cheap 24 volt marine 6.5 starter online. It was line $90-100 with a 3 year warranty. It came with an extra bracket to support the front of the starter. It threaded right into an existing hole in the block. Its is needed to keep the bolts near the flexplate from ripping out of the block.

for batteries there are several schools of thought.

Some people are purists and will insist that you require the 6T series batteries for the truck. The flooded version only has a 6 month specialty/commercial warranty and are several hundred dollars. Most auto parts stores don't keep them in stock. The AGM version will likely have to be ordered from a manufacturer to get a decent warranty, but you're talking probably minimum $600 per battery.

The 6T series is overkill for the HMMWV application, but the military finds advantage in standardizing batteries across the fleet, so it makes sense for them to use it due to logistics. In reality in a warmer state you can start a HMMWV on a pair of lawnmower batteries if everything is in good shape (not recommended though)

Group 24 batteries fit pretty well, but be sure to secure them tight as if they shift they can short out against the hold down if you have the older alumium type. You do need to make sure you purchase the flat top version for the bracket to work without modifications.

If you're staying in cell service and not doing any serious off roading then regular flooded batteries will be fine. As others have mentioned, they are cheap and readily available. Getting the maintenance free version is better as you don't have to go check under the seat and refill them with distilled water like standard flooded lead acid batteries are supposed to have done regularly.

If you do a lot of off roading or away from cell service then AGM batteries are a good choice. They do cost more, but last about 30-50% longer life than flooded cell batteries, and stand up to vibration and rough handling better than flooded.

Picture for example of what a pair of group 24 AGM batteries look like installed and secured. I mostly went AGM for the reasons listed above; I take my truck off road onto the jeep trails and minor rock crawling, as well as it being my bad weather work truck and occasional remote camping vehicle. If it was primarily a pavement princess I could have saved a lot of money (these batteries were $300 each at the time when the cheap wally world batteries were around $60)

Coug,

When I’m offroad I’m rarely in cellphone service areas. My $66 Walmart 24Fs do just fine.

I never travel alone offroad. If I need I can boost NATO to NATO.

Batteries fail. That’s the name of the game. Change them every 4 years and you will be fine.

IMHO

Never going alone out into the boonies is usually rule #1, but too many people ignore it.
most of us don't have a second NATO vehcile that we can boost from off road.
I will say though with the introduction of the cheap lithium jump pack that part doesn't really matter.

I do standby generators for a living. The batteries in them live a pretty easy life. Live on a trickle charger, only crank once a week (some as little as once a month), and the battery is way oversized for the application. The Wally World specials are the ONLY battery I've seen fail in under 1 year in service.

The only real point I was trying to make is there are some situations where it makes sense to spend money and buy a good quality battery, and some where it is less important.

It's not uncommon for folks to paint their canvas to "new" again. lots of folks use RAPCO Parts paint or even stuff at big box stores. search for RAPCO in the forum's search bar and read to your heart's content. here's RAPCO's website https://store.rapcoparts.com/index.html

For just a door, I'd buy just a few rattle cans and be done with it.

Oh-I've used the Rustoleum camouflages spray paints but they tended to fade quickly. I think RAPCO is a much better canned spray paint

Also, we have a Paint section where you can ask questions and get a boat load of opinions if you go the painting route. Here's a link worth reading before you post there: https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/lets-talk-about-hmmwv-paint.164858/
