On my vehicle it meant “use me as a parts car because M1114’s are a PIA”.

I have seen something like this. Its for accountability. In the old days of inventorying, (10 % of ALL property in the unit, done MONTHLY) everything was done with ink pens, and pre-printed forms. During a change of command inventory, EVERYTHING in the unit gets looked at, and the serial numbers all get looked at, with model numbers and several other items, before a new commander signs for it. It takes a lot of time and effort to do this. Unless you have done it, you will never know a better way to waste time and create new white hair on your head. Or lose it. The Matrix code has all that data stored in it. Point scanner, pull trigger, go to the next item. I would have given my left arm for such a device/system back in the day.
