EDIT Feb 15, 2026… BLK HMMWV is correct. This is the place to describe my customizations. Repairs and upkeep in the HMMWV area and this for my customizations.
Luggage rack for clamshell pop-top camper:
Because I have the old style steel HMC4 repurposed by the military Hummer civilian use roof on my M1165, I could not just place my camper tent upon the roof like one can do with the newer aluminum roof M1165.
I have documented the majority of my work on my M1165 in the Humvee forum, however I am documenting this custom work here as information for anyone else who needs to make a custom luggage rack
I utilized 3 inch steel 1/4 inch thick angle iron, 2 in. Square tubing that is also 1/4 inch thick.
I measured and cut. Eric Hummer H1 welded with 220 amp fluxcore. Thanks Eric!
Outer edges of the fenders were utilized because of the darned air-conditioning units interfering with access to the inner edges. Front to back tubes (times two) measure 7 foot (which is the length of the camper). Side to side tubes (times three) are 79 inches. Angle iron (times 2) 42 7/8 inches long.
This was so strong that when we tried to partially cut a relief cut in order to bend a crooked pipe and we pulled with another Hummer, it would not move so we had to complete the cut and move the metal and re-weld. Truly bulletproof.
