Good morning everyone. I’ve recently bought an H-83 from someone on marketplace for $125. Previous owner sold it to me because he “couldn’t figure out how to get it running”. I am at my wits end with it and I’m about to pass it on to someone else to figure out. I think I understand why he washed his hands of it.
First thing I noticed was that it had no fuel in it. I filled it with regular road diesel and it wouldn’t start. cleaned the filter, fixed the filter bowl o-ring, and it fired right up. Ran hot and good for maybe 5 hours before I started running into issues. It always ran pretty smoky, but I wasn’t sure how normal that was. Apparently that not normal. Eventually the unit started burning much cooler, and the relay /alarm kept constantly tripping. So I pulled the igniter/ fuel nozzle/ flame detector assembly and looked inside the burner, it was completely full of soot, probably 0.5in of buildup in the flame tubes., likely causing all my issues. Chunks of these deposits were also blowing out of the exhaust and all over the yard, looking like a steam locomotive.
Now my issue is that I can’t figure out why it is smoking SO much and filling the burner with soot. fuel pressure goes from 20 to 90 when calling for heat. I changed the fuel nozzle to the correct part. I removed the burner assembly and completely steam cleaned, flushed, and inspected it. Fuel filter is clean and good. The electrodes are constantly firing and look good. The aluminum flapper valves look good.
I’m just not really sure where to go next on this thing as I’ve hit all the big areas. My only current theory is that there’s maybe some sort of blockage in the fresh air pipe that supplies the burner. I’ll have to buy a borescope to look well in there. The exhaust pipe seems to be free of obstruction.
Ive checked other similar posts and I’m out of ideas. Anyone ever have any similar issues and found a solution? Thanks
