M916-M920 transfer case rebuild

Afternoon

I was curious if any of you fine folks have rebuilt the transfer case for the M916 series of trucks?
My 917 decided it didn’t want to move this morning, and it didn’t take long to figure out why. Obviously it was headed to grenade town for quite a while before finally exploding. I was just hoping someone would chime in and tell me if it’s worth trying to fix.

Any info is appreciated.

Oh man that sucks…I’ve got two that I need to rebuild soon, the front outputs are completely chunked on them. Hope we can get some helpful experiences in here.

Can you share where you found all the pieces in case someone else is faced with this?
A local bearing shop (bearing distributors) was able to cross all the bearing numbers from the TM. Was able to get SKF replacements for a good price.

Found the gears on eBay. A garbage truck manufacturer uses them in a similar transfer case. (McNeilus Corporation 18020FX and 18021F)

SECO in Augusta GA has the complete gasket kits in stock.

While I was at it, I also found a new air chamber on eBay as well. Got (2) of them for $50 each. They cross to part number BW T-245531.

All tolled, spent right at $1700 on everything including shipping. The cheapest I had found a used, untested complete transfer case was $2500 and I would have had to drive 6 hours to get it. So I figure complete rebuild was the best way to go.

Bearing numbers:

1218 crosses to SKF 6218
18151F crosses to SKF 6313 (2 required)
4395-4335 is a Timken number for bearing and race set (2 required)
876H crosses to SKF 6311-Z (single shielded)
1079G crosses to SKF 6218-Z (single shielded)

These can all be found rather easily on the ole auction website for pennies on the dollar.

Anything about the process that isn’t covered very well in the TM? I’ve looked through it and it look pretty straightforward.

Your t-case looks great, especially with the new air chamber!
