After much looking I've decided it is time to do away with shielded spark plugs (autolite 2223) on my 4 cyl. fairbanks morse magneto genset. (cir. 1969) I sure hate to do this but replacement plugs are $50 if you can find the right ones (common on some aircraft engines) and it wold be wise if I could go to a local store for more modern plugs.

can you imagine pulling the shielded cables off and making plug wires, rtv them into the magneto holes and putting boots on new cables but my plugs are probably 50 years old, maybe more! has anyone done this that they might simplify my 'new' life?

Well, here goes... If those spark plugs cost $50 each and if they lasted for 50 years - that's a dollar a year. AND, if you go buy some regular spark plugs and rig up something to spark them... I would imagine it will cost you more over the next 50 years than spending a buck a year. Really. If you could find a quad pack of plugs for $200 it would be a heck of a deal.

FWIW: Midwest military has adapters to maintain the waterproofing for replacing the 2223, but I don't know if it would work for you.

All the best, 2PbFeet
I highly doubt those will work with the fatty 2223s.

Also think of it this way.... If you were to go with a cheap plug for say $5 each you will end up replacing them every few years. If you go with top of the line iridium plugs you could end up paying $20+ each for the wrong plug....
Might as well get the right ones for $26 and be done with it for a lifetime.
