404.1 fan hub question

While working under the hood of my 404, I happened to move the fan which along with its hub and pulley seems to turn freely by itself, separate from the rest of the pulleys and the crankshaft.
It turns in either direction with the same amount of resistance and I don't hear any noises like the rattle of sheared off bolt heads. There's no forward or back end play and the fan/pulley has no wobble or side play.
To my knowledge, these things never had a viscous fan hub although that's the way it acts. Pulling the radiator is a pain to check things out but worth the effort to keep from smoking the engine.
Any thoughts?

Mystery solved.
The fan, its hub and pulley sit on a bearing and revolve seperately from the crank pulley. Typical Teutonic (over) engineering.
Glad I opened it up though because the fan hub assy was dry and needed to be lubricated (that's what the small plug is for ).
90 wt. gear oil is recommended.
