New here...but have been looking through the posts and all the wealth of experience/knowledge available from you all.

Seeking some advice on how to add an extra 5 feet to the back of an M1079 box. Examples being TravelTheGlobe's first LMTV on youtube of course, and The Overlander Project's Blue "Stewie".

How would one make the addition to the box structurally sound? Would it involve welding to aluminum?
Best way to go about insulating after?

Thanks for readin'

Theres not a lot to weld to on those boxes ! Maybe 2 ft on the front and 3 ft on the rear with a lot of fab work and drill and rivet to the front and rear box frame of the 79 box . Dove tail the rear 3 ft section back to the 79 box at the tail lights so as to not mess up your approach angles .

Heya!

Thanks for the heads up. From the few examples I see, "looks" like steel square tubing is bolted to the back of the box. And dove tail seems to be a law of LMTV box add-ons Lol.

But then best approach on sealing all the small gaps between surfaces/sheet steel, tbd.

Man is that your build in your photo? Looks heavy duty with the shipping container...and some crazy fab work to make the approach angle

SIKA 221 SIKAFLEX is hard to beat . There are a few windshield urethanes like 3M but they are expensive ! And yes thats mine you can look thru my build page and maybe get some ideas and improve upon ! That the beauty of this build forum is all the different builds and ideas in one place ! @Third From Texas is building a 1079 down in Corpus check his page out too !

A few M1079 builds have added an extension out thru the rear doors.

If I were extending the box, that would be how I'd do it.
At one point, I considered a slide-out doing just that (extending out a couple feet when retracted, then expended out several additional feet when deployed).

I will come back to that SIKA 221 SIKAFLEX. Saved.

Pretty cool, @Third From Texas. Build I am looking to do would require the permanent space of a fixed rear add-on.
Trying to compromise between having small knife making "shop compartment/garage" and full living quarters including space for power/100+ gal water, kitchen, bathroom/shower, fixed bed.

Ya'll ever experience driving your LMTV onto an Army base?
I have a story.

My buddy and I rolled into Red River in my M1079 to recover a M1082 trailer I'd won at auction. We checked in and after about a hour getting all the clearance paperwork done, the soldier at the desk handed us a faded map that looked like it had been Xero'ed a thousand times. He muttered "just follow the signs" and pointed towards the door. So with map in-hand, off we go thru the checkpoint.

The first couple signs were clear, but pretty small. We missed the third one (iirc, it was cardboard and had bent). So we went right instead of left. And that's when the fun began...

Keep in mind that Red River is in pretty deep woodlands. One turn in and only the road and trees are visible. We started passing all sorts of wonderous vehicles, equipment, and building. A tank trail I wanted to "accidently" turn onto. Pretty much every missing HMMWV x-door missing from auction trucks (some stacked dozens high, sometimes just a pair learning against trees) scattered along the roadways. Lots of vehicles from the Gulf and Afghanistan adventures (my buddy had been kicking doors in Iraq in OpDS so he knew all the vics and a lot of the unit IDs). Miles of turns and hundreds of structures with wonderous giant air handling units with untold treasures buried deep below all passing before our eyes as we became even more hopelessly lost.

After an hour of being lost in the woods and driving in circles (which had gotten less fun as we were already behind schedule and had like circled thru areas we were absolutely not intended to see) we still couldn't reach anyone at the number they had provided. We were sitting at yet another t-intersection in the woods when I spotted another LMTV coming up behind us. I motioned them up, and two civilian-dressed guys looked at us at first puzzled then sorta in shock. I can only assume that they were maintenance or motor pool guys out goofing off in a truck they had worked on. We explained our situation and after eyeballing us for a bit, they said "go back that way, make one left, follow the road until you see building, make the first right."

And we did. Nobody asked where we had been and we were in no hurry to volunteer the info. I don't think we'd have really been in any trouble but I didn't want to stick around to find out. We hitched up the load, caged the brakes, tapped the drums with a 5lb sledge to get the shoes free, and homeward we went...

btw: if you're a civilian and going frequenting a military base or places with government security are going to be a common thing, get a TWIC Card if you can. It's just a government approved BG check cert. You'll be done with your ingress paperwork in minutes not hours.

Also, ask the guy at the desk for a better friggin' map....

Ahh RED RIVER if anyone ever wonderd if we have enough armor no need to worry every time there was a break in the trees just as far as you could see armor on both sides of the road facing each other ! Not as breath taking as HOOD but still crazy !

One more note:

I conceal carry.
Period.
But I know not to do so on base.

When I first arrived at RRA I parked and walked up to the gate.
I asked where I needed to sign in and asked where I could secure my weapon.
A smug "Not here" was the answer from Gate Gomer in-charge.
One of the dimmer bubs at the gate then told me to "just drive down the road and hide if behind a tree".

I waited for my bubby to arrive and we both left our weapons in his truck.

Gomer at the Gate says "I saw you open your M1079 shelter and put your gun in the back".
And I had opened the back and gone inside in direct line-of-sight, just a few yards from the gate (but nothing related to my weapon).
When I told him we'd secured our weapons in the other truck, he literally said "BS".
To which I replied by opening the back and told him he was mistaken.
He couldn't be bothered to actually look (which as a Gate Gomer is his ONE friggin' job).

Keep in mind, these are the same dipshits that didn't notice we'd then go on to take the grand tour.
Another reason I wanted to put highway between my truck and that base.

LOL
