Is the Behr product not lasting? Several of my vehicles are over 6 years old with Behr? What are you expecting? Just curious.
Noticeable degradation after 5 or so years. Drops like a rock and loses pigmentation quickly. Went from near new at the 5yr mark to faded and completely thrashed about the 6-7 yr mark.

I have not hit that yet. I am in so cal and vehicles are always outside in sun. What area and garaged or outdoors? All others i have read seem to be 5 or 6 years with no problems. Hope someone else adds to this.

I put the 4300 on my trucks with a paintbrush almost 10 years ago. You can see the brush marks now, but the paint is much darker than the original finish - about half way between faded CARC green and the 60's dark green semi gloss. They get a lot of sunshine. At 50 feet they look great, up close the brush marks stand out like a sore thumb. YMMV.

I think if you're doing single color it's fine - it fades relatively uniformly.

The issue is the time/effort doing 3 color. If I can get 10 years instead of 5 years it's worth it.

So...

After a false start with Permanizer...and after reviewing the damage from the dew/moisture it was only on the curved edges (roof edges, hood edges, etc) and could have been salvaged but I was so frustrated I just sanded again and shot second coat, which cured relatively fast. came out the next day and shot the 2 other colors.

I was able to lay down all 3 colors... however, ran into some quirks.

With Behr it can be thinned pretty easy and shoots well even from their $13 HF 'airless sprayer' (which I don't even see that they carry anymore). With Permanizer it's THICK... I had to thin it way down in order to get it to shoot properly. 2nd issue is, thick paint and small tips don't work well, but you need a small tip to control the pattern and make the 3 color camo correct. So, in that respect, I could only get a rough approximation of the NATO 3 color because I couldn't really control the spray that well.

So, 1st issue was my fault - not allowing adequate cure time before exposing to moisture.
2nd issue was paint thickness..... that's gonna depend on what equipment you have, but bumps it up from a casual thing to a 'needs more equipment' thing for most people. Some people HAVE shot it out of an HVLP but they're talking 90-100+ PSI for proper flow rates/atomization.

That being said... it came out pretty decent. It's still in hiding since it's supposed to rain for a couple days - but I'll be reassembling it, getting it stenciled, putting all the new hardware on it, etc.

and... for all those guys complaining about having to tape off and blah blah blah.... this is what happens when you just coat things with oil before you spray.

Nice write up! A lot of good detailed information which is rare (it takes effort) in todays world, but not on this forum. I've learned so much here over the years. Thank you all for the time and effort!

Carry on,
James

For the guys that have rolled and brushed, low nap or foam roller? I know nap can leave fuzz. Was thinking of rolling the inside of the M1009. Just got my vinyl samples today from Bytech/Amazon. Looks like the burgundy is as close as I'm going to be able to get. They have smooth grain and a football texture to choose from. I may go with a combination of both. I redid the interior 15 years ago in a tan from johanns fabrics. They are pretty crispy now from the florida sun. Going with a true automotive vinyl and supplier this time. I do the sewing myself and will post before and after pics. Just don't expect too much since my stroke 3 years ago left me with a tremor in my left hand. Really excited to go through her again since learning about the Behr paint option.

Don't forget the Flotrol. It smooths better and slows it down, improving the bond.

Will be finding out about the Behr as I am buying the M817 that I sold about 15 years ago I used Ultra. Now my question is to go 383 green over it or the "field green" . What FS number... 34094, 34095?

look at this thread
I was actually wondering about the difference of 34094 Green 383 and 34095 Field Green or other green that is close. Just wondering about preferences... if any. I always used 34094 in the past. Truck comes tomorrow.

True color is darker. Camera is pulling alot more red out of samples.
I dont see a dedicated interior forum section so I'll post this here until I get moving on it good and then will start it's own thread. Sewed up the samples to do a thread color test and it looks like black is the winner! Can't find the right color burgundy thread in UV resistant polyester, only nylon which i don't want to use. Here's a Pic.

Update on the PPG.

Decided to pull it out in the rain and let it sit for a couple days, just to make sure anything that was gonna wash off, would.

Haven't fully scraped off the glass yet.

Also, gets dark @ 1630 here so, enjoy the 'night' pics..... lighting provided by my portable sun.

I think the colors are just a hair off. The green especially looks a little too light. I think part of that was my fault for over-reducing it and using both water and flotrol.

The brown also, in my eyes, looks a little light.

Again, it has been rained on for a couple days and was still soaking wet -so that may account for some variance, but...

I'll have to see what it looks like when it's dry to see the reflectance.

Would I use Permanizer again? Based on these results? I'm leaning towards 'no'.

I will say it does seem harder/more durable than Behr 4300 - and the somewhat off hue is most likely due to having more solids - one of the things that will allow the paint to stay truer to color, longer - but also caused issues with spraying because it was so thick.

My question to you guys...

Are my eyes off? Do you think that's the normal CARC colors when wet?

Just me, but I agree with you about the brown. Seems more like a "milk chocolate" than a three color camo................it is bad? NO! it's definitely acceptable. IMO

You know, just for the record:

- What does it matter (and who cares), if you exactly match CARC colors?

Unless there's a contest (and you are determined to win it), with a big prize for "exact matching", go ahead and just do your thing and stand tall!

Tell you what, TechnoWeenie, it looks GREAT to me!
