Deuce year and engine matching

Looking at a 2.5 ton deuce but not sure about the year matching the engine.
Guy selling has a 1978 deuce 2.5 ton but its got a cat 3116 In it. I thought those were 1994 and up years? government auction title says 1978.

Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to figure out for the government what the government messed up and how that mess up was probably compounded by a government contractor.

What transmission, front body work and other differences between the M35A2 and A3? It could just be a clerical error.

Looks just like my m35a2. Has a tires psi air system at the steering wheel

I believe that when they upgraded the m35A2 to the A3 the were using old trucks. Use 2 to build 1. It would still be the same year as the donor truck. The A3 was never a new truck , just an upgrade. If it starts life as a 1978 , stays that forever.

IIRC they were new trucks with just a few converted prototype/test beds, but cant open your link and coming up empty on any XM35 searches right now…

I know of at least one M35E3 that was built with a Cat 3116, had the A3 bed, a ZF 5-speed manual transmission, and air-assisted steering. I believe it was one of the ESP concepts that the Army was testing. It looked like an A2 from the outside except for the A3 bed. That truck was for sale on Facebook a few years ago and came from a New Jersey fire department that upfitted it as a grass truck.

The engine bay looked very cramped without being widened and elongated like the actual A3 trucks.

I hope to see some pictures of this thing. Sounds like a neat find!
