Fuel Pump Question

I'll admit I'm cheating.......somewhere buried in all the posts and answers and manuals is probably the answer I seek, but I've done a bunch of reading, looking, searching etc., and I'm just going to cheat and ask my question to the guys that have the answers.

I've been rebuilding a very early M151, no A model or anything like that. I think it has an A2 engine in it, with lots of this and that not hooked up or missing under the hood for an A2. Trying to make it start and run better, my know how to neighbor has helped to adjust the distributor, clean the rotor, clean the plugs, reset the gap, tighten this, yadda, yadda. As best I can, I'm trying to get this thing back to original, however.

It def. has a newer version fuel pump on it, no vacuum lines for the wipers. I want to put an early version vacuum pump on it so I can use the wipers as designed. There is no in tank fuel pump, the pickup tube is curved with a sock on it. So, if I install the older vacuum fuel pump, will it even run without an electric fuel pump somewhere between the tank and vacuum pump? What other "issues" am I creating by trying to switch back to an earlier fuel pump?
