You probably could simply use an adjustable relief valve to unload the pump when reaching the stops, I am curious why you could not use the PS pump to deliver the needed pressure. Does look like an interesting project!

I did not use the PS pump because I have no knowledge or experience with hydraulics. I would not have the skill to build the controls necessary. I managed to squeek by doing with electricity
