Recommended Injection Pump Rebuilders

I’ve seen more posts on here and the Facebook group on who not to use for injection pump rebuilds, but not near as many on who the recommended groups are. Clearly HPG is legit, but the prices for his pumps have sure climbed lately. Who does everyone recommend these days for a quality trouble free re-build of a DB2 for a naturally aspirated 6.5 HMMWV? I’ve tried contacting Classic Diesel Designs here in Texas to see if they can do a rebuild, because they claim to bore the pump and install a ceramic sleeve to prevent the aluminum to steel wear of the advanced pistol bore, but they haven’t ever contacted me back.

Let me be clear on pump rebuilds….
the cost of a pump rebuild is purely based on how thorough the rebuilder is, the $350-600 pump rebuild does NOT get you an “OEM” rebuilt pump.
Ive spoken to true stanadyne pump rebuilders and they always replace the rotor, that part itself $450-500 by itself, the rebuilders like DCP told be they “eye ball” the condition but it’s not replaced, thus the $350-400 rebuild fee, their pump were absolutely garbage.
As a shop? I only now and have for quite some time only used OEM new or rebuilt from HPG or MAC.
you wanna do a pump once…not multiple times and months sending a pump back and forth hoping they finally do it right…
Are there good rebuil companies? Yes….who are they? Don’t know anymor, I only buy from HPG or MAC.

Absolutely looking to do this once with the labor time involved, especially when I'm limited to weekends. I figured HPG was foolproof, but have had hits and misses lately with MAC parts being counterfeit.

counterfeit parts is a problem across all OEM distributors and in the U.S. military, I’ve received one part from MAC that was Chinese, A simple call fixed that, the supplier of the part to MAC was the culprit, NOT MAC, MAC is a supplier to the U.S.Military.
HPG uses a TACOM approved rebuilder, I personally stock about $35k in new pumps in shop…what pump model are you in search of?

I've ordered thousands in parts from both so that's good to know. I'm not 100% sure I need an injection pump just yet, but this one is on our M1123 with the serpentine N/A GEP 6.5. I need another weekend to check out the tank and sock condition, and replace or temporarily bypass the lift pump which is weeping again, but its behaving like the metering valve might be stuck. This one has always kicked off with a quick flick of the starter, but after I couldn't start it for about 4 months, it stumbled and stalled and when finally started, would die as soon as you lifted the throttle. I was just preparing in case I work through my SOP and figure out it is the inj. pump this time.

pull the top off the pump, the metering valve is sticky from sitting in old fuel, you very well have or have the on set of algae.
this is a constant issue in the shop and the fleet of 20 plus trucks …

While not completely related to rebuilding a pump, I did have a 'when I let off the throttle, the engine dies' issue when I first got my M1097A2 from the de-mil yard. The truck started and ran fine but I had to be real easy on letting off the throttle or it would die. Reading through here, it was mentioned that the vanes may be dirty and sticking a bit on the inlet pump which can cause the fuel pressure to quickly drop inside the injector pump and cause a fuel starvation when letting off the throttle. Since it was a 'new to me truck', I replaced the fuel filter (looked pretty clean) and filled the canister about a 1/3 full of Seafoam, B12, and Carb/Choke cleaner before topping off the other 2/3 with diesel. After a couple mins of idling, I noticed the truck rev'd quicker and didn't die no matter how fast I let off the throttle. Maybe the cleaner cocktail dissolved some gunk? Either way, as long as your truck starts, I would follow RHW's thoughts on a good cleaning is probably the first round of effort.

LCA078, I'm glad a chemical cleaning helped. I have recently discovered that the biodiesel blend sold in Texas will turn into a thick tar-like substance after a few years. Perhaps this was just starting in your truck and you caught it in time to get it cleaned out before it got really ugly.

Thanks for the invite, Scott. While I can't make this Wednesday due to family issues, I'll see how to join the mailing list for next events.

Hope you're staying warm!

Side question: I have a couple pumps that I picked up as surplus. One looks like new old stock and the other looks used but good. Do any IP rebuilders test pumps prior to rebuilding or just do a rebuild regardless to ensure they only put clean pumps on their test stands?

I'll take that as a glimmer of hope that some will. Last month I called a couple 'rebuild' shops in the local Austin area and asked if they could test only but was told no- they had to rebuild before test. I say 'rebuild' cuz I got the impression they just send them out to their own preferred rebuilder. Looks like I gotta call outside my local area...
