Side Mirror Question

Hello all... I have been busy working on the drivers side mirror arms, trying to clean up the rust. The center support rod (on my truck) has a 1/4-20 threaded post extending from the top and bottom of the rod (see pics below) As you can see, mine are pretty well toast from time and rust. Are these threaded post's removeable? Is this rod hollow?

I was thinking IF the rod is hollow, perhaps a person could cut off the rusty post's, drill a 1/4" into the top and bottom of the rod until you hit the hollow portion of the tube, then stick a piece of 1/4-20 All-Thread through the rod and reuse. Thoughts, anyone??

I don't think it is all threaded rod through the center . 1967 M52A2 I ended up cutting off the 1/4 threaded ends center punching the center and drilled and taped 1/4 x28 then lock tight a piece of thread rod .

I tried to pound out the center rod from both ends, but it didn't budge. I think your solution is the one I will go with. Fortunately, I have a good set of taps and dies. I am guessing that you chose 1/4-28 because all of the bolts on the truck seem to be fine thread. I will probably just go with 1/4-20 so I can easily get replacement bolts. Thank you for sharing your fix to this problem...

Several years ago I did the exact same thing using a stainless 1/4 X 28 bolt. Only took a few minutes and with the SS it was a permanent fix.

I cut off the threaded stems extending from each end of the rod and then TRIED to drill through the remainder of the threaded stud, down into the rod. It did not go well. I finally scrapped the part. I did purchase an 18" pipe nipple (1/2 Pipe), cut it 17" and welded a 5/16" nut to each end. A little sandpaper and some primer paint and "Presto", a functioning part! Now, I have to reassemble the mirror bracket and reinstall it to the truck. UNFORTUNATELY - I have no idea how to do this. I checked quite a few TM's and could only find a single reference to a side view mirror (TM 9-2320-309-20P, Page 600). The mirror they illustrate is NOT what I have. If any know knows where to find the standard mirror assembly in the TM's, or is will to photograph their mirror assemblies and how they attach to the truck, that would be MOST helpful. I don't yet have a passenger side mirror assembly, but I am hoping it is the same (or very similar) to the drivers side. Thoughts, Anyone????
