Adding a new hard top, new drivers window and custom modified military mount for the ham radio antenna… weather is putting a damper on this project as it was negative degrees out the last 2 nights but they are painted and ready to install… paint wasn’t even dry yet in the picture I promise it’s not gloss haha
would you be interested in selling that antenna bracket?

In the process of replacing the rubber headlight isolators.

I had my hood up for an extended time and came out one day to my headlight hanging by the wires.

Kind've insane to think that your headlights could just fall out - but apparently they're wear items that rot over time.

Apparently the rubber isolator failed.

For those that need them......

Had a load of scrap on the truck and a nice enough day to haul it to the scrap yard. Made it to town and truck started getting hot. Pulled it into the Walmart and found the water pump belts off and the compressor belt twisted.

Was able to get a ride to the house and came back with parts and tools. Got it fixed and home this afternoon. Went much smoother than expected.

My fault, as I knew the belts were old and getting bad. That's why I had the parts already, just hadn't installed them yet.

1. Belts are consumables - replace them like you would when you replace oil or windshield wipers- this prevents 90% of the issues.
2. Belts weigh nothing and cost very little - keep them in the truck (and a basic set of tools).

Glad you could at least reflect and realize you screwed up.. :D

The real question is, didja lurnd sumtin?

Haha. Yes. Lesson learnt. Truck has been mostly sitting. Last 3 years have been 70+ hours a week and none of the toys have been getting used. Probably only drove it once this year. So it needs some attention and I tried to press it into service without doing any checks.

I had the belts already because I knew they needed replaced. I'll probably order another set to keep handy. Funny you mentioned the windshield wipers because I noticed one was half torn off and I made a note to order those, too.

I learned from the school of hard knocks too, so don't feel bad.

Exact same scenario - albeit on a passenger car with a serpentine belt. 'I'll do it tomorrow' turned into 180+ days of 'I'll do it tomorrow' which ended up in a 'no, you'll do it right now, on the side of the highway, because you have no water pump spinning anymore'.... :ROFLMAO: Luckily I was in a rural area and the local parts store ran a belt out to me from a couple miles down the road. I love small towns.

I think it was Doghead that summed it up pretty well with these trucks...

'If it's rubber, replace it. If it's electrical, clean it'.

When I was younger I remember doing crap the easy way and in hindsight wonder how I got away with even a fraction of what I got away with. Nowadays it's 'I'm gonna work on it here, now, in my driveway, instead of on the side of the road'. Like a gunfight, there's no such thing as a 'fair fight' when it comes to maintenance (or anything else, really). Stack the odds as much as you can in your favor to make sure you have what you need to get back on the road in the event of a failure - can't assume anyone is gonna help these days.

I used to laugh at people carrying air tools and massive jacks and whatnot in their car - then I realized it's about being smart - So my truck has air/hydraulic jack, M18 high torque (~1200ft lb) impact with proper socket sizes and spare batteries, full tool set, etc. Work smarter, not harder.

Here's a 5T up for municipal auction this week , it was apparently a M51 or M52 which they sat a 2-1/2T cargo bed upon .. Here's what that looks like, for anyone who wishes to know .. BTW, it's located in the northeast

Which brings up another visual point from when I had a M49C tanker body for sale a few years ago .. M49/M50 tank bodies will also fit as nicely as this cargo bed upon a M51/M52 5-ton , for doing dust control, fire control, etc

A couple weeks ago, I drove up to Pennsylvania to get a hard top and bumper for my M936A2. Today, I cleaned the filter for the main hydraulic tank and changed a few lines that seemed to be leaking. I thought I would be able to get by with just washing the filter. However, there was some gray gunk splattered all throughout the filter. Nor, could I see sunlight coming through. So, I ordered another screen and will replace that before putting it back in the tank and filling it with oil. I could not see any obvious holes in the hydraulic lines. But, when I picked it up from the previous owner, they were wrapped with plastic and duct tape. The lines were wet and cracked quite a bit. So, I figured it'd be best to change those out too.

The new screen for the hydraulic filter came in a couple weeks ago. I finally made time to take apart the filter and swap it out.

When I picked up my M936A2 (Buffalo Soldier), it had 2 tires that wouldn't hold air. One stayed inflated for about 24 hours, whereas I might get 2-3 days out of the other. The tread was good (> 80%) all the way around. However, all had some cracking, and one steer tire had a huge chunk taken out of the sidewall. The spare was obviously a blowout and was left on the truck in its shredded condition. So a whole new set of tires is necessary. I had nightmares of rolling down the road with the right front steer tire blowing. I would have liked to replace like for like and stay with the Goodyear AT-2As. However, I found Goodyear MV/Ts that were closer (FB Marketplace) or cheaper (Government Liquidation). Today, I replaced the 1st of the set. I found 3 of them, already mounted on rims, close to me via FB Marketplace. The only issue was that they came off an FMTV and still had the CTIS valve assemblies. Not a major issue. I just had to remove half of the airline. Eventually, I will have to break down the wheel assembly to remove those and reinstall regular valve stems. Fortunately, I do not have that issue with the 4 tires that I got from GL. For those, I will just mount them on the rims currently on the truck. But I will install new valve stems when I break them down and reassemble. Changing these tires is indeed a 2-man job, if you have the help. 1 down, 5 more to go (plus the spare!!)

I worked on some oil leaks and changed out the air compressor on my 1967 M52A2 I changed out the multifuel a while back and put in a Mack end673E .
I cut the back of the finder so I would not have to remove the exhaust pipe when I remove the fender to work on this side of the truck I added a new air governor I still want to change the air intake hose for the new compressor .IMG_2478.JPGIMG_2478.JPGIMG_2478.JPGIMG_2475.JPGIMG_2476.JPGIMG_2480.JPG
