Starter replacement.
After lots of checking dimensions and applications, I found a starter that's almost a drop-in. Turns out a starter for a bunch of '81 through '89 BMW models
will work. 12 v permanent motor with gear reduction. = more torque. Smaller and only about half the weight of the...
Push button headlight switch testing done using a DC power supply and a VOM.
Connected ground wire first, applied DC voltage to the #15 wire and Switch number one came on; all buttons flashed blue then went to amber.
Made a selection then pressed ENTER and all looked good. Press ALL OFF then...
The power train is a civilian motor out of a early 70s 300 SEL (MB's attempt at fuel injection replaced with a Unimog intake w/ single Zenith carb).
It's married to the Unimog bellhousing. The flywheel and crank were balanced so I can run the beefier Unimog flywheel, clutch and pressure plate...
Since my 404.1 is no where near stock, I decided to go with easier to find electrical components. Finding a 24 volt headlight at your local parts house can be hard on you and your wallet.
Lurking under and behind the air compressor and power steering pump is the 24 volt generator.
Cleaned out...
Got some stuff I'm going to be posting in the classifieds. Among the items are two push button light switches; one marked "Good?" and the other unmarked.
I'd like to test these before putting them up but have no 24 VDC system vehicles. Any way to check them out with a VOM alone? I do have a...
Mystery solved.
The fan, its hub and pulley sit on a bearing and revolve seperately from the crank pulley. Typical Teutonic (over) engineering.
Glad I opened it up though because the fan hub assy was dry and needed to be lubricated (that's what the small plug is for ).
90 wt. gear oil is...
While working under the hood of my 404, I happened to move the fan which along with its hub and pulley seems to turn freely by itself, separate from the rest of the pulleys and the crankshaft.
It turns in either direction with the same amount of resistance and I don't hear any noises like the...
"Period" photos in B&W.
Winch cable now gone in favor of synthetic rope. I'm milling my own hawse fairlead to use with the rope instead of the roller fairlead.
Third picture shows machining the winch side of the fairlead out of 1"X 4" bar stock. Raised rectangle fits through the bumper/winch...
Sheet metal done.
Next is to convert over to 12 vdc from the ex-military 24 volt system. That might be OK for authentic but try finding a 24 vdc electrical component at the rural general store you're stopped at. This thing is far from original but I'm building for function, not "factory".
A...
I like the 411s but am just too big to fit; so I figured I'd just turn my 404 into one.
I shortened the frame from the back which entailed shortening the drive shaft and torque tube, moving the spring perches forward and just cutting off the excess frame rails.
Here's the truck after shortening...
The less cross-breeding you have to do, the better. Rebuilding the original engine might just restore some of its earlier pep.
I've got a 404 and changed out the Unimog gas six for one out of a MB automobile-- BIG difference.
It's a gift-- and a curse. After having a few deuces and starting my baby HEMTT project, I seem to have managed to end up with some spare parts that I'm still unearthing.
Trades / swaps / being paid in parts for some fabrication projects for others-- it all seems to accumulate... or maybe it...
Good idea with a 24v source.
I know the switches are static sensitive; even to the point of being told to connect the ground to the switch body first before plugging it into the wiring harness. Just as soon not smoke it while testing it to see if it's good.
I've got two push button headlight switches and want to test them but have nothing with 24 volt M-series wiring system I can plug them into. Is there any way to test these (VOM?) to make sure I don't just have 2 push button headlight switch paperweights?
I ran into the same problem and found that, unlike the HIAB cranes, the Groves were a one shot deal. Drwgs supplied by the military who took the drwgs back along with all spare parts and assembly fixtures when the contract was fulfilled. And that's as per Grove Cranes themselves.
