HMMWV Interior Options (Console, seats ?)

Hi All,

My HMMWV is set to arrive in a few days and I was wondering what recommendations for a console you all may have or have used. I would like something that has cup holders - a radio would be nice but sounds like it could be a pain to setup. Do we have any drop in seat options available now ?

Although I am a relative newbie, I will chime in with my experience.

For seats, there are tons of options. You can get inexpensive jeep seats brand new for a a little over $100 each with careful shopping. Generally these are not reclining and do not include a sliding base. You have to build brackets to mount them. I have also seen folks hitting the junk yards and getting very fancy luxury seats from things like Ford Explorers and then you can hook up the electronics and get electric heated, reclining, motorized ones for a couple hundred each in leather. Finding four alike is difficult, but a set of two do show up.

For consoles, the biggest thing is to make sure it is easy to get your dog house opened! I kind of built my own out of MDF and then wrapped it in pleather built around the radio tray I have. Yep, it is a PITA to get the dog house opened so make sure you design it with that in mind. I have seen some professionally made up consoles for the Hummer but those were priced in blood.

Seems to be the case for most aftermarket stuff (priced in blood) for these vehicles. Can the dog house slide off to the side once its unhooked or does it require that it comes straight out from front to back ? I'll look at some Jeep sheets - looks like i am going to have to get more handy with sheet metal. I've built plenty of Sub boxes back in my high school days (25+ years ago) so I am not worried about that. Was thinking of building in some speaker mounts and a double din + couple holders. Wanted to see some other consoles to get some ideas.

Thanks

I went heater corbeau seats and American machine dash. Nothing beats heated seats. Home made solutions look like trash.

I'm building something like the below for just this purpose. Need to finish it but have all the parts. Mine has a 5x7 speaker at the ends. A bin in the middle to hold my aviation intercom headphones along with a Bluetooth turner and a number of USB ports.

I have the radio shelf that I removed the bottom shelf from, I then bolted a cheap "safe"/lockbox to the underside for semi-secure storage. On the top, I flanked the sides with small .50 ammo boxes with mesh netting at the front to keep the "inbetween" section as a small console area for miscellaneous items. On the floor, in front of the lock box, I made a simple MDF tray and cup holder piece, it also mounts a mid 1990s Nissan armrest/console to lean on. Took about $50 and a few hours to bang out the console, including skim coat and paint. It won't last forever, but it works for now and looks good enough. I'll post pics when I get home, but I'm 4,200 miles away from the old gal right now.

What are those door panel covers? I'd love to get a set for my rig. Thanks!

The likelihood of my spending that much for their seats is low

the likelihood that I will spend over 2 grand for a center console I can build myself is zero

I bought the seats, albeit not the heated ones, as I couldn’t make my own. I’m 100% with you on the console, though. The dash kit is absolutely bonkers as far as price.

Hit up eBay or if your cheap and patient Alibaba for the seats. They have knock offs for nothing.

The Dash was worth it to me. Everyone has a different financial situation time is money in my case. Nothing home made would come close to the fit, finish and look of the American Machine dash.

I went with heated Corbeau seats, American machine dash, center console & grab handles myself. Well worth the cost IMHO.

Im coming in late, but hopefully I can still help out. I also did the American military machine console, it's great. honestly no complaints. It is a bit bulky when removing to access the doghouse, but I dont think it's something we need to do so often that this is an issue. I had it powder coated black to match everything else. It had to be modified slightly at the top because I have the Restomod AC system installed. that AC system is nice but pricey, it also takes up some dash space so I couldn't use the AMM gauge kit. I also recently went with heated corbeau seats front and rear, I can't wait to see how they do this fall/winter :)

you can see the seats and console here, and that is a custom face plate for the dash that was cut to house two additional gauges (Boost and EGT). All the gauges are speed hut with custom face plates. and the stereo is a marine style double din unit. it has a line in for a back up camera, but Im thinking of running a night vision camera on the front into this at some point.

One item that I think is worth the money is Plan B rear bulkhead storage bin. If you have a 4 man bulk head it sits perfectly between the rear seats and adds nice looking built in storage.

I also had someone fabricate this mount to add a marine style storage bin in the trans tunnel, mainly so anyone in the back would have a safe/dry place to throw any valuables they dont want getting exposed to the elements. powder coated to match some other parts on the truck. eventually I will bed line the interior. I just dont know what I'm going to use yet. I want to good sound a thermal insulation as well, so I am in the planning phase for that part. I was going to bed line the whole truck, but I have decided against that for now.

I tackled sound insulation in my M35 and achieved amazing results. However, the humvee is a little different and I'm not sure how to proceed. I am considering a sound deadening paint and a bedliner known for sound insulation properties. Another consideration is just how much I want to spend - I can think of some great ways to get results, but it's costly.

Check out soundproofcow.com

In my M35 I used a combination of mass loaded vinyl with what's almost like tar with a foil facing. On top of this I used the above website's Quite Barrier, 2" thick. My M35 went from just under legal sound levels to the quietest vehicle I've ever owned, at least inside the cab - it's still pretty loud outside. If I were to follow a similar solution on the humvee I would need to protect the insulation in places where feet would tread or materials would be stacked. The footwells in the humvee are tight, and this limits what can be used - maybe just the mass loaded vinyl and a thin mat on the floor to protect that surface.

Any full vehicle solution that gets good results will cost at least $1k in materials.

I cut to fit a one inch thick peice of weighted rubber gym mat. The weight is enough to keep it in place over the whole area between the seats. Made a huge difference in noise and much less heat from the drive train. The have somewhat similar pads at Tractor supply used for horses.

Quick tip cutting horse stall matt: Knives work best. Also a "wet wood" saw blade in a worm drive circular saw with lots of water works for those long, strait cuts. Horse stall matting stinks to high heaven when it is new! (Like the tire/ castor section of Harbor Freight) Gym mat doesn't smell much. I have installed both in home gyms. Mapei Pu-1k is a great adhesive to use.

I think I'm gonna go the horse mat route for the center area. I'll get a long piece that will reach from the rear gate all the way to the dog house, cut for that area. I'll use glue and put velcro on the floor and the bottom of the mat. I do a bit of off-roading and I don't need 100 lbs of mat in my lap. I'll put mass loaded vinyl in the foot wells & sides dry fit then glued down so they can take foot traffic.

I don't expect it will be as quiet as my M35 but it should knock the noise down enough to listen to music or my shortwave.

80 sq/ft of 1/8" MLV is $250 on Amazon, 1 gal of glue is $100, the horse mat will probably be around $250, the Velcro (hook & loop) will probably be around $100.

Probably have to wait for spring or summer for the install because of the glue.
