Sir, you are incorrect. This gasket was copied from the Gardico kit gasket using a 3 D scanner. Then it was cut on a CNC router with a knife head attachment. I'm guessing we're within +/-.010" from the Gardico. We also had an NOS gasket for comparison. Guess what? Looks just like the aftermarket gasket.

It's always good news when someone is putting a hydromatic together and creating parts. I'll check with the mech heads and see if anyone is in the rebuild process.

I have two from the original kits on the shelf and see now that there is some difference between them. One of them has the little drop in the middle so that's curious. Early vs late model maybe?

This is from a friend: That cover that's got the drain in the front that's for a 301 MG hydramatic transmission, which was in the M 59 APC. The GMC had a 302M or a 303M hydramatic and those all had the drains in the bottom. The real m211 gasket should be like that NOS one that doesn't have the little notch in the bottom.

The one recommendation I have is that if this is a water side gasket to use a material with an SBR binder instead of NBR. Palmetto doesn't offer this. Garlock 3200 would be a better option.

The Palmetto 2970 you're using is the equivalent to Garlock 3000 if you want to make the comparison.

I talked about this with the "Gardico" engineers. That is why they used the material they did. It stands up to gasoline, diesel, oil, water, and heat. Also, if your careful during disassembly you can reuse the gaskets. I spent about 6 months going back and forth to Gardico bringing in parts I cleaned up to get scanned and "fabed" up until we got the finished product. The end product was more money than I wanted it to be, but that was out of my control. Many friends asked why I didn't just sell the gaskets myself and make some profit out of all my labor. I just felt it was better for the "collector" community to have this resource then keep it to myself. That way even after I pass on or leave or whatever people can still buy gaskets for their transmissions.
Now if someone comes along and uses these gaskets to make a "cheaper" copy for everyone, that's fine too.

The problem is that the material cannot withstand some of the conditions simultaneously. NBR rubber doesn't age well when exposed to hot water especially.

With that said, you'll probably be fine. I operate a fleet that runs 24/7 so we rack up a lot of time at temperature and the weaknesses of various materials become evident quickly.

Think about radiator hoses. They used to be a common maintenance item on vehicles in the 1970's and prior. The manufacturers switched to EPDM rubber construction and now the hoses last the life of the vehicle provided they don't come into contact with oil.

Sheet gaskets have a rubber binder and the life of the gasket can vary greatly based on the binder selection.

From what I found, the material size for a sheet of Garlock 3200 was 120" long. I only looked at this for a short period of time so maybe it can be purchased in smaller sizes. Long story short, I'm not looking to be a gasket supplier. I'm doing this for a friend and thought I'd offer these to others. He's fine with the material that was selected - this is what Advance Auto had on the shelf so I went with it. If these parts and this material is of interest, let me know and I can run some. Cost? Determined by how many you want. The material is about $12 for a 18" x 36" roll. This is a limited time offer!
