Where exactly are you at this point? You fixed the chaffed wires and then after that you had smoke coming from the generator, correct?
The smoke has nothing to do with holding the start switch too long.
I understand from above that you don't have power to the lugs, but is the generator making power now? Does the volt meter or Hz gage read anything and do you have any voltage at the plug outlet ( and are the breaker and GFCI both reset?
First we need to get the generator making power, then we can worry about getting it to the lugs.

Good Day: I attached 2 docs. They are in the TM Section to down load. I Circled the item on the Schematic. Your GFCI gets power from TB5 terminal 4 for the white wire and TB5 terminal 6 for the black wire. I have seen them else where. Yours looks like somebody used the outlet real well popping the breaker and running it at almost 10A for a while. I have seen a lot popped completely out of the device. Thankyou Stanley orange extension cords in the field instead of using load terminals. May want to leave the old one in place to plug the hole and get yourself a GFCI, for your safety, at a hardware store and wire it in. Put a inline fuse in there on the black wire you can change to protect the wiring as most you find has no built in breaker. TRC wanted from the ARMY almost $300 a pop in 2022. The outlet is normal everyday item found at Home Depot. Got a few war stories about these things. If it has to be exact, I have an address to try. Recommend using moist area outlets with covers as this outlet is in the weather.
Hi there is been a while my father’s really sick and I take care of him so sometimes I have do that and can’t get on here or work on my Gen Set.. With that being said do I just connect the white wires together after I put a inline fuse on the black wire?
