Where exactly are you at this point? You fixed the chaffed wires and then after that you had smoke coming from the generator, correct?
The smoke has nothing to do with holding the start switch too long.
I understand from above that you don't have power to the lugs, but is the generator making power now? Does the volt meter or Hz gage read anything and do you have any voltage at the plug outlet ( and are the breaker and GFCI both reset?
First we need to get the generator making power, then we can worry about getting it to the lugs.
