If the set stopped as soon as the cable came off, that makes me think your battery charging system is not working.
Is this set new to you? Have you had it a while? Has it run for longer periods before this happened?
There are two float systems in the tank. The sender for the gauge, and yes, you could make a float for it with can or other object. But it has absolutely nothing to do with your problem. Like LITD wrote, the other float is normally a non repairable item. There are civilian replacements for it.
I THINK, if push comes to shove, you could take the cap off the Diagnostic Connector, use a wire to jump from pins K and P, and the fuel pump should run. @kloppk check me out here.
It may not be the level sensor. Could also be the A9. I would take the panel off the front and pull the level switch out and see of its just the float stuck or broken. Then if not, you can start to hot wire.

My generator was running fine when a loose battery terminal...
Yes, it can be rewound. There is a thread about a gen set repair, where the pros and cons to new, repair and rewind were the topic. I will see if I can find it.
Start a parts wanted thread, if you have not already done that. Do not forget to put the NSN in there, or to use it when looking on line. 6115-01-383-3134.
I will send a mail to someone not in the forum, down in the GREAT STATE OF TEXAS, who might have one. No promises.
