Been a while since last update, so here it is!

I had read somewhere... and then promptly forgot... that the military sometimes will drain the fluids from both differentials and the transfer case.

I was reminded of this when my rear tire locked up and I found an impressive pile of scrap metal inside the bone dry rear differential.

The other part of the problem was I was so excited and impatient to get out and drive that I failed to stop myself & run through the steps to make sure the humvee was ready.

Reminder to all humvee newbies who are reading this... CHECK THE FLUID LEVELS IN YOUR TRANSFER CASE AND BOTH DIFFERENTIALS!!!! (and everywhere else for that matter!) Learn from my impatience and pain!!! Transfer case and front differential were also dry but did not have any damage (as far as I can tell).

The positive? I got to learn how to replace a rear differential... which positively sucks. But afterwards it is running - and running well. :)

Replaced both front seats with after-market seats which are much more comfortable than the square blocks of foam.

Replaced both rear seats with high-back versions of hmmwv seats. Was able to take the family out for a ride!

Also placed a rubber pad between the battery cover/seat mount plate and the batteries just to ensure no contact so the passenger doesn't get a nasty surprise (although it seems there was plenty of clearance).

I ran into temporary issues with insurance but they have been worked out so vehicle is completely street legal and I use it often!

Current problems/projects: hmmwv likes to jump into limp mode. Stopping and restarting resets it but I'm using y'all's knowledge to troubleshoot the problem. Also troubleshooting windshield washer fluid motor and looking at rearview visibility options.

Thank y'all for your help and knowledge!
Sorry to hear of your troubles, REPLACING ALL FLUIDS AND FILTERS has been a common mantra here for years, not just checking as you have no idea what was used to begin with and most lubricants actually have a shelf life so most are expired by the time you get your HMMWV.

and you don't know what ELSE is in there with whatever Lubricant (or not) potentially sitting with a pool of water in the bottom and rusting bearins and such. Or other crap in a fuel tank, or cooling system...

You did not mention the geared hubs, they are likely dry also, you may find damage creeping up on you for some time, if you drove it enough to trash the rear diff you likely have damage to the other diff and transfer case.

I checked those as well (after the fact) and they were full. I do worry about whether the front diff. and transfer case suffered damage as well. The plug from the front diff showed minimal buildup, and I couldn't get a good view inside the transfer case beyond what's visible in the drain hole.

I sure hope you dodge the bullet there, Gutschken, because you sure have more than enough pain already. Here's hoping for you.

UGH!

The starter I had rebuilt last year now has dead spots. You know, the one where you hit it with a hammer and it is ok till the next time it happens!

I'll have to find another starter rebuilder in town. Even if he "warrantied" it, taking this heavy thing out is getting old!

sadly, in another lifetime I used to sell parts. I have seen many units that had brushes changed, unit de-greased & cleaned and spray painted black and sent out the door by local "rebuilders" brought in to get a factory reman name brand unit.

If the unit was shot , they would claim parts not available if was anything not main stream.

I hope this was not the case for you!

I guess I am getting really good at "bench pressing" starters in and out. Ok, actually I used a tranny jack and 4x4 wood blocks to help me. But I got-r-done in3 hours including cleanup.

I was fortunate to find a brand new in wrap Neville starter for a little more than one of the rebuilt ones or one of the Chiesium ones that are available for the usual over priced vendors.

Now what to do with the old one I had rebuilt. Seems a shame to send it to the dump. Bet someone could rebuild it properly. But it would cost a fortune to ship it to someone willing to try. I guess I will post it in the Pay-it-Forward forum for someone that might be able to rebuild it themself and wants to come get it?

Not to be a buzz killer.. really, but if we drive with a Red Cross emblem it can be a problem. I had an ambulance kit and thought about using the Red Cresent which is like the red cross overseas on mine. they cant complain from overseas.

Kinda curious why the red cross would be a problem.

I would be more worried about peoples paranoid reaction to the muslim crescent symbol.
Do you think people would expect you to respond to an accident or take them to a hospital?

I just remember when I bought my kit a couple folks mentioned people complaining...folks always want to complain anyway.
It may roll for years and nobody says anything. I ended up selling the kit, it was for my M151A2 which I should not have sold.

People have no business complaining, that's just their tired sense of self-importance:

- Pay that kind no mind

But there is a chance of confusion:

- Maybe keep a well-stocked first aid kit in the rig

- And if people stop you asking for help, maybe expect to give up some time to lend assistance

Which likely you'd do anyway. Know what I mean?!

Kinda curious... That red cross is like KRYPTONITE.

Whoever wears or displays the sign of the Red Cross or any insignia colored in imitation thereof for the fraudulent purpose of inducing the belief that he is a member of or an agent for the American National Red Cross; or

Whoever, whether a corporation, association or person, other than the American National Red Cross and its duly authorized employees and agents and the sanitary and hospital authorities of the armed forces of the United States, uses the emblem of the Greek red cross on a white ground, or any sign or insignia made or colored in imitation thereof or the words “Red Cross” or “Geneva Cross” or any combination of these words—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

The red cross and red crescent emblems are protected symbols under international humanitarian law and national laws. Any use that is not expressly authorized by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols constitutes a misuse of the emblem. Use of these emblems by unauthorized persons is strictly forbidden. Please contact the ICRC for more information.

Many states DMV have something to say about display too. Might be cool or a hot ticket ???
